the VIN codes and trim tags

engines, paint colors. Each

Chevrolet by the Numbers
catalogs provide the same
information as the ID catalog
but also include casting numbers
for blocks, heads, carburetors, axle
codes. This catalog includes photos,
diagrams and technical information.

You can read the date code on the
little aluminum ID tag on your distribu-
tor, to find out when your distributor
was manufactured. In the example
shown, this distributor has a series
of stamped numbers. The first seven
digits are just the part number of
your distributor, which can be found
in a GM parts catalog. The three let-
ters that follow are the date codes,
“5H3”. The first digit, “5” is the year, in
this case 1955. Next, “H” is the eighth
letter of the alphabet, and represents
the 8th month, August. The “3” merely
represents the third day of the month.
So, this example distributor was built
on August 3rd of 1955.
